Biological and Agricultural Engineering Division

Award for Early Achievement in Education

The objective of the BAE Early Achievement in Education Award is to recognize evidence of outstanding teaching performance and/or scholarly achievements in engineering education that occurs unusually early in a faculty member’s professional career.

Eligibility: Tenure-track faculty member (not yet awarded tenure) with not more than six years of experience post-Ph.D. (or other appropriate terminal degree), excluding post-doctoral work, in the field of biological and/or agricultural engineering.  Recipient must be an ASEE member and a member of the BAE Division at the time the award is made at the ASEE Annual Meeting.  The recipient must attend the meeting to receive the award.

Number of Awards: One per year, although the BAE Awards Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any recipient in a given year.

Nature of Award:  Recipient will receive full early-bird registration for the upcoming ASEE Annual Meeting.  Recipient is also asked to give an invited lecture on her or his teaching methods, philosophy, and/or accomplishments in a BAE Division-sponsored session at the same meeting.

Nomination:  Nomination for this award shall be made by the nominee’s department chair.

Criteria: Selection is based on evidence of outstanding performance as a teacher and/or scholarly engineering education researcher, as documented by students and peers.

Selection Process:  The Awards Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair, and the Awards Chair, will select an award winner from the pool of nominees.  Members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the years that they serve. 

Nomination materials

  1. Completed ASEE Awards Nomination Form.
  2. Nomination Statement (3 pages maximum): Discuss why the nominee is deserving of the award. Indicate the range of educational responsibilities which have been performed, describe the aspects of the performance which distinguish the nominee, and provide specific evidence of meritorious performance.
  3. Nominee vita (4 pages maximum): An abbreviated current vita that includes all information related to the award.
  4. Statement by the Nominee (2 pages maximum): Include a statement of teaching and engineering education philosophy prepared by the nominee.
  5. Letters: (6 letters maximum): This section should be prefaced with a list of the names and positions of the letter writers and an indication of their relevance to the nomination. Letters should come from current and former students, as well as colleagues. When possible, comments from colleagues should reflect team teaching and education service experiences, observations, or other first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s performance.
  6. Student Evaluation Data: Student evaluation information should be displayed in summary form condensed to no more than two pages, including an appropriate range of courses or offerings and reflecting especially the most recent years. Student evaluations should be displayed in the context of college or department norms with a clear explanation of the characteristics being evaluated and the rating scale being used.
  7. Optional Appendix: Any additional documentation of pedagogical innovation or scholarship, classroom performance, vita information, letters or testimonials may be added as an appendix. Note that nominees are not served well in the evaluation process by the submission of a large body of uncondensed material.

Other Information

As part of the nomination packet, please include a 100 word (maximum) paragraph about the nominee. If your nominee is selected, the paragraph will be included in the printed program for the ASEE Annual Meeting and in related news releases. Note the following guidelines:

  1. Full name of nominee, with middle initial;
  2. Specific accomplishments to support why the nominee should receive the award.  Include appropriate examples of teaching and scholarly engineering educational accomplishments; and
  3. Summary statement should be extracted from the supporting documents and should not include any material not already in the nomination package.

 

Deadline and Submission

The complete package of nomination materials must be received six months in advance of the Annual National ASEE Meeting at which the award is to be given, typically January 15.  The nomination package should be submitted electronically (pdf) via email to the BAE awards chair.
 

Award for Excellence in Teaching Materials and Methods in Biological and Agricultural Engineering

This award, sponsored by the ASEE Biological and Agricultural Engineering Division, recognizes an individual or group of individuals in the development and dissemination of excellent teaching materials and methods in Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and an inscribed plaque which are presented during the ASEE Annual Conference.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements:
Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality and effectiveness of Biological and Agricultural Engineering instructional materials and methods. Additional factors that may be considered include: the scope of utilization of the nominees' materials or methods, the innovative nature of the material or method, the nominees' involvement in teaching Biological and Agricultural Engineering students, and ASEE membership.
 

Best Paper Award

This award recognizes the best paper accepted for presentation in a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) Division at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.

Award:
The award consists of a plaque for each author and a $400 honorarium to be equally divided among all authors. The award is presented at the BAE Division Business Meeting during the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.

Criteria and Qualifications:
To be considered for this award, the paper must be presented at the Society’s Annual Conference and Exposition and published in the conference proceedings in the year awarded. The paper must have been peer-reviewed, and the final version must have been accepted for publication through the Division’s review process.

To be considered for this award a paper must meet the following criteria:

  • The paper’s author(s) must demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of education in the biological and agricultural engineering discipline.
  • The paper must advance the biological and agricultural engineering education literature.
  • The paper must be well written and, as such, reflect positively on the BAE Division and the society.

Selection Process

All papers presented at a BAE Division sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and published in the conference proceedings will automatically be qualified.  Special consideration will be given to those papers nominated by reviewers as part of the annual division peer-review process.  The Best Paper Award Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair, and the Awards Chair, will select an award winner from the pool of eligible papers.  The members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the year that they serve.

Biomedical Engineering Division

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper presented in a session sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division during the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition and published in the Annual Conference & Exposition proceedings.  The award consists of $200 and a plaque, which is presented to the author(s) at the Biomedical Engineering Division’s Awards Banquet at the Annual Conference & Exposition in which the paper is presented.  To receive this award, the recipient(s) must be present at the BED Awards Banquet.  The award is based solely on written papers judged according to the following criteria:

  • The extent to which the paper advances knowledge or creative practice in the field of Biomedical Engineering Education
  • The utility of information to a wide range of Biomedical Engineering Educators
  • Clarity of writing, originality, innovation, and documented results.

Selection Process
Nominations for this award will be based upon recommendations submitted by reviewers as part of the annual division peer-review process.  The Award Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair and the Vice Chair for Career Development and Awards, will select an award winner from the pool of nominated papers.  The members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the year that they serve.  The award winner will be automatically nominated for competition for the PIC II Best Paper Award.  

 

Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award

This award recognizes the contribution of Theo C. Pilkington as a true pioneer in Biomedical Engineering who contributed significantly to the advancement of Biomedical Engineering Education.

The Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) of ASEE anually awards the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award. This award is conferred by the division for significant contributions to biomedical engineering education as evidenced by the development of successful undergraduate or graduate level programs, curricula, publications as well as by membership and activities in ASEE/BED and other biomedical engineering organizations. The award consists of a commemorative plaque and a check for $350.00.

Best Poster Award

The Best Poster Award is presented annually and recognizes the best poster in a session of the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition that is sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division. Posters are typically Work-in-Progress submissions to the Annual Conference. If the winner submits a full paper on the same topic to the Biomedical Engineering Division of the ASEE Annual Conference in the following two years, the winner will be reimbursed for the paper submission fee (~ $100).

Selection process:
The Division Chair, Program Chair and Program Chair-Elect (or alternates appointed by the Division Chair) will form a committee that selects the best poster at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition. Selection will be primarily based on the quality of the poster, its presentation, and relevance to Biomedical Engineering education. To be eligible, posters must be presented at a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division and the corresponding paper must have been accepted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference Proceedings.

 

Biomedical Engineering Teaching Award

This award is conferred by the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) to recognize contributions in the field of biomedical engineering education by new faculty members as evidenced by innovative teaching materials, curricula, textbooks and/or professional papers and by activity in ASEE/BED and/or other biomedical engineering organizations. Awardees must have a primary educational role in biomedical engineering, either through a dedicated BME/Bioengineering program or through a related engineering program. Faculty members who have no more than 5 years (by June 1 of the year in which the award is given) of teaching experience with primary course responsibility at the university/college or community college level are eligible for this award. The award consists of $350 and a commemorative plaque.

BED Travel Award

The Biomedical Engineering Travel Award supports the development of talented engineering educators by introducing graduate students and postdoctoral associates to the biomedical engineering education research and scholarship community. There will be at most two grants of $500 per year to subsidize travel to the ASEE Annual Conference. Recipients will be recognized at the annual BED Awards Banquet.

Who is eligible?
Applicants should be graduate students or postdoctoral associates in a biomedical engineering program or related discipline. Applicants should currently be pursuing, or be planning to pursue, a career that includes a significant emphasis on engineering education.

How does one apply?
Candidates self-nominate by completing an application packet.

What will the application packet include?
A completed application form (2 pages) that includes:

  • Professional contact and other information
  • A personal statement of teaching experience, career goals, and reasons for wanting to attend the ASEE Annual Meeting.
  • A current CV including but not limited to: education, publications and dissertations, instructional activities, and any educational research activities. Instructional and educational research activities should be emphasized.


By what criteria will my application be judged?

  • Career goals that include teaching as a major component;
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or an instructor;
  • Financial need and career stage;
  • All other things being equal, preference will be given to applicants who are authors or coauthors of an ASEE paper that year.

Chemical Engineering Division

Thomas and Donna Edgar CACHE Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education

This award, sponsored by the CACHE Corporation, is presented for significant contributions in the development of computer aids for chemical engineering education. The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium and is presented at the Chemical Engineering Division awards banquet held at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Lectureship Award

This award, currently sponsored by the ASEE Chemical Engineering Division, is presented to a distinguished engineering educator to recognize and to encourage outstanding achievement in an important field of fundamental chemical engineering theory or practice. The individual shall demonstrate achievement through the formulation of fundamental theory or principles, improvements of lasting influence to chemical engineering education with books and/or articles, and the demonstration of success as a teacher. In addition, evidence of the ability to conduct original, sound, and productive research, and an interest in the progression of chemical engineering through participation in professional and educational societies shall be demonstrated. The recipient presents a lecture at the ASEE annual conference. The award consists of a $3,000 honorarium, $500 travel allowance, and a commemorative plaque presented at the Chemical Engineering Division Banquet of the ASEE Annual Conference.

William H. Corcoran Award

This award, sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, is presented each year to the author of the most outstanding article published in Chemical Engineering Education. The award consists of a small honorarium or travel expenses and a commemorative plaque.

Ray W. Fahien Award

This award is given in honor of Ray Fahien, who was editor of Chemical Engineering Education from 1967-1995 and who was effectively the founding father of the journal, establishing it as a premier publication vehicle in the field of chemical engineering education. Professor Fahien selflessly gave his time and talents to advance pedagogical scholarship, particularly in the careers of young educators, through his dedication to the journal and the profession. The award, which is given annually to an educator who has shown evidence of vision and contribution to chemical engineering education, consists of a $1,000 stipend and a plaque to be presented at the Chemical Engineering Division Banquet of the ASEE Annual Conference. Educators who have been faculty members for not more than 10 years as of July 1 in the year of the award are eligible.

Nominees will be evaluated based upon two equally weighted criteria:

  • Outstanding Teaching Effectiveness. Nominees must demonstrate evidence of excellence in the training of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the classroom or through supervision of independent study projects. This can be demonstrated by such evidence as standardized student evaluations over a three year period along with letters from students or former students (not more than four).
  • Educational Scholarship. The award recipient should have made significant contributions to chemical engineering education that go beyond his/her own institution. Examples of such evidence include development of instructional methods or materials (textbooks, instructional software, assessment instruments), along with the associated publications in refereed scholarly journals and conference proceedings. This evidence may be supported by the applicant's teaching dossier, reprints of papers and up to four supporting letters, three of which should be outside the candidate's institution.

Lifetime Achievement in Chemical Engineering Pedagogical Scholarship

This award, normally given for lifetime achievement, recognizes a sustained career of pedagogical scholarship which not only caused innovative and substantial changes, but also inspired younger educators to new behaviors which benefit students in Chemical Engineering.

The Award:
The award will be presented at the Chemical Engineering Division banquet at the ASEE Annual Conference on an as-merited basis, not necessarily annually. The award consists of a plaque prepared at the editorial offices of Chemical Engineering Education. Acceptance of the award implies the obligation to attend the Chemical Engineering Division Awards Banquet at the ASEE Annual Conference.

ChE Division Engineering Education Mentoring Recipient Grant

The purpose of this award is to attract more faculty members to the American Society for Engineering Education, and in particular, the Chemical Engineering Division. The award consists of a certificate and a ticket to the Chemical Engineering Division banquet, which is held at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Criteria:
More than one grant may be given annually. A faculty member may apply for this grant by the last day of February. The application consists of a curriculum vitae and a maximum one-page statement of interests in educational scholarship. A successful nomination will be from a faculty member who has an interest in educational scholarship and involvement in ASEE but has not attended a conference in the past five years. Self nominations are also allowed.

ChE Division Young Faculty / Future Faculty Mentoring and Travel Grant

All chemical engineering or chemistry faculty within their first two years of teaching, or graduate students in chemical engineering or a related field and intending to go into teaching as a career are eligible. There will be at most one or two grants per year.

Applications are due October 31 of each year. Applicants must have submitted an abstract to meet the mid-October deadline for the following summer’s ASEE conference. For faculty the application consists of a curriculum vita, a maximum one-page statement of interest in educational scholarship and a copy of any submitted abstracts. For graduate students the application consists of a one-page nomination letter by a faculty member who is a member of ASEE, the student's resume, and the abstract of any ASEE talks with the student as a coauthor. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the awards chairs and directors. If there is a conflict of interest, the directors will identify another member of the committee. Award announcements will be within two weeks of the application submission.

The amount of the grant is $900, intended to subsidize travel to the conference, and will include a ticket to the ChE Division Banquet. A condition of the grant is that the winner attends the meeting and presents their paper. The grant will be presented at the ChE Division Banquet. The grant winner(s) will be provided with a ChE Division mentor (an individual determined by the ASEE CHED executive committee) who will meet with the grant winner for both formal and informal interactions during the meeting. Preference will be given to first-time attendees at the ASEE Annual Conference. For graduate students the grant is intended to build upon the existing ASEE "Bring-A-Student" program.

Best Paper Award

The Civil Engineering Division Best Paper Award recognizes the author(s) of the most significant paper published or presented in the ASEE Civil Engineering Division activities during the previous year. George K. Wadlin Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes sustained and distinguished service to the Civil Engineering Division of ASEE, support of its activities and notable contributions to civil engineering education. The award, consisting of a plaque and a certificate, will be presented to the recipient at the Civil Engineering Division awards ceremony at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Gerald R. Seeley Fellowship

This award was established in memory of Gerald R. Seeley, a chamion of civil engineering education and a past chair of the ASEE Civil Engineering Division. The award encourages new civil engineering faculty members to become active in the Civil Engineering Division of ASEE by providing a monetary award to defray expenses associated with attendance at the Annual Conference. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and a certificate.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Be a current faculty member in civil engineering or a closely related field.


2. Have five or fewer years of teaching experience.

Best Paper Award

The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize the writing of outstanding papers for publication in the proceedings of sessions sponsored by the IS Division during the ASEE Annual Conference.  The award consists of an engraved plaque of recognition and a certificate.  The recipient will be required to attend the division annual business meeting, held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference, to receive the award.

Criteria: The paper must be presented at the conference to qualify for the award, although the award committee’s judgment is based solely on the quality of the written paper.  The winning paper will be based upon the following considerations:

ECE Distinguished Educator Award

The ECE Distinguished Educator Award is conferred by the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Division for significant contributions not only to ASEE, but also to the ECE education profession.

The award, which is given annually to an educator who has shown evidence of vision and contribution to ECE Education, consists of a commemorative plaque to be presented at the ECE Division's business meeting at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Nominees will be evaluated based upon two equally-weighted criteria:

  • Outstanding Teaching Effectiveness. Nominees must demonstrate evidence of excellence in the education of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the classroom or through supervision of independent study projects. This can be demonstrated by such evidence as standardized student evaluations along with letters from students or former students (not more than four).
     
  • Educational Scholarship. The award recipient should have made significant contributions to ECE education that go beyond his/her own institution. The award consists of a commemorative plaque to be presented at the ECE Division's business meeting at the ASEE Annual Conference.

The award consists of an engraved plaque which is presented to each author at the division’s banquet held during the Society’s Annual Conference.

To be considered for this award, the presentation must be made at the Society’s Annual Conference with a division sponsored technical session in the year awarded. The presentation should be based on a paper that has been peer-reviewed and the final version accepted for publication through the division review process. Bernard R. Sarchet Award

This award recognizes lifetime achievement in engineering management education. Named after one of the founding fathers of the academic discipline of engineering management, the award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions over an extended period of time to the discipline and the division and who exemplifies the highest standards of the professorate in engineering management. The award consists of an engraved plaque and a $500 honorarium.

Award Criteria:

  • Current or past membership in the engineering management professorate. The engineering management professorate is defined for this award as teaching in a university program, which offers degrees in engineering management, management of technology, and other closely related areas.
  • Exemplary service to the engineering management discipline. Exemplars would be (1) service as a chair, head, or program director of a major engineering management program; (2) service as editor, associate editor, reviewer of a peer-reviewed publication in the discipline; or (3) a national reputation for promoting the academic discipline of engineering management.
  • Exemplary service to the Engineering Management Division of ASEE. Exemplars would be (1) service in a leadership role in ASEE or the Division, (2) active support of Division programs and initiatives, (3) service to the professorate in engineering management, and/or (4) service to the students in engineering management programs.
  • A national reputation in engineering management through service to the practice of engineering management. Exemplars of this would be (1) membership and office in a relevant engineering management professional organization, (2) a publication record promoting engineering management practice, or (3) other service to engineering management practitioners.

Merl Baker Award

This award recognizes exemplary service to the Engineering Management Division. Named after one of the founding fathers of the academic discipline of engineering management, the award is presented to a member of the division who has provided significant service to the division. The Environmental Engineering Division is committed to furthering excellence in engineering education and in environmental stewardship.  Each year an award is given to the presenter who best represents the Environmental Engineering Division through a combination of the quality of a written paper and its presentation at the ASEE Annual Conference.

The award is presented each year at the Environmental Engineering Division business meeting held during the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a $250 honorarium, a certificate of recognition and a commemorative plaque.  In the case of co-presenters, individual certificates and plaques will be presented, but the honorarium will be split among the number of presenters.

Candidates for the award must be members of the ASEE Environmental Engineering Division.  The paper must be presented by the author(s) at the division's business meeting.  The paper must be an original paper written specifically for and published in the Proceedings of the ASEE Annual Conference.  It is permissible that the paper be of similar content to other professional papers written by the author(s).

Keating Award for Innovation and Leadership in Lifelong Learning in Graduate Engineering Education

This award is established in memory of Donald A. Keating, who, during his association with the ASEE Graduate Studies Division, epitomized the best in innovative graduate engineering education and scholarship. Keating was a visionary in developing and creating the National Collaborative for Engineering Graduate Education Reform Strategy. The strength of the National Collaborative vision is sustained by a strong U.S. system of professional graduate engineering education directly relevant to growing the U.S. engineering workforce in industry, which is the primary mainstay of our competitiveness as a nation. The award is to celebrate the passion, vision, and integrity of Donald Keating’s leadership in development of ideas, content, and programs that foster the ideals of professional master’s and doctoral degree programs in the pursuit of engineering, leadership, and technology innovation.

This award is given to an individual who over a period of time demonstrates commitment and leadership to the ASEE Graduate Studies Division, especially in the area of professional graduate education, as was demonstrated by Donald A. Keating. This award is reserved to recognize an extraordinary level of support for professional graduate education. At most, one award will be made annually.

The Award:
The award consists of an etched plaque and a $250 honorarium towards travel to the ASEE Annual Conference where the award will be presented at the division's business meeting. The awardee must be present at this meeting to accept the award.

Criteria and Qualifications:
The award winner must be a Graduate Studies Division member who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and leadership in fostering graduate programs to nurture life-long learning for innovation; produced documented scholarship in the area of engineering graduate education; and contributed service to the Graduate Studies Division. An individual may receive this award only once.

Nomination and Selection Process:
Each year, the Director for Collaboration and Awards of the Graduate Studies Division will solicit nominations between October 1 and February 1. Self nominations are permitted. Industrial Engineering Division

Best Paper Award

The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize industrial engineering educators for the preparation and presentation of outstanding papers at sessions sponsored by the IE Division during the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a plaque of recognition for first place, and a letter of recognition for second place (runner-up).

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, papers should be presented at sessions sponsored by the IE Division and be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings. Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality of the written paper and its relevance to IE education.

Nominations: Announcement of the award competition will be included in the call for papers for the IE Division. Papers eligible for this award must be peer reviewed and recommendations for consideration be submitted by reviewers or review coordinator (Program Chair). Special Nomination Instructions: The Award Selection Committee will select an award winner and a runner-up. The award winner will be automatically nominated for competition for PIC I Best Paper Award. In the event that the IE Division nominee shall receive the PIC I Award, the runner-up would be selected for the IE Best Paper Award.

Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes exemplary service to the Industrial Engineering Division and is presented to a member of the division who has provided significant service to the division. The award consists of an engraved plaque and can be received only once by any individual.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes an outstanding industrial engineering educator in recognition of the educator's contributions to the profession. The award, which recognizes lifetime achievement in industrial engineering education, is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions over an extended period of time to the discipline and the division, and who exemplifies the highest standards of the professorate in industrial engineering. The award consists of a suitably engraved plaque presented at the annual Joint IE/EMD/EED Division Dinner. The award can be received only once by any individual.

Award Criteria:

· Current or past membership in the industrial engineering professorate, which is defined for this award as teaching in a university program that offers one or more degrees in industrial engineering.

· Exemplary service to the industrial engineering discipline. Exemplars would be (1) service as a chair, head, or program director of a major industrial engineering program; (2) service as editor, associate editor, reviewer of a peer-reviewed publication in the discipline; or (3) a national reputation for promoting the academic discipline of industrial engineering.

· Exemplary service to the Industrial Engineering Division of ASEE. Exemplars would be (1) service in a leadership role in ASEE or the Division, (2) active support of Division programs and initiatives, (3) service to the professorate in industrial engineering, and/or (4) service to the students in industrial engineering programs.

· A national reputation in industrial engineering through service to the practice of industrial engineering. Exemplars of this would be (1) membership and office in a relevant industrial engineering professional organization, (2) a publication record promoting industrial engineering practice, or (3) other service to industrial engineering practitioners.

New Industrial Engineering Educator Outstanding Paper Award

The purpose of the award is to encourage and recognize new industrial engineering educators for the preparation and presentation of outstanding papers at sessions sponsored by the IE Division during the ASEE Annual Conference.

The recipient will be awarded $250 per author up to $500 per paper. Senior faculty are eligible for the award as co-authors, but not for the monetary award. The award also includes a plaque of recognition.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements: Papers should be submitted and presented by tenure-track faculty or faculty having less than seven years of full-time teaching experience. The paper should be presented at a session organized by the IE Division, and be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings. Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality of the written paper and its relevance to IE education.

Nominations: Announcement of the award will be included in the call for papers for the IE Division. Questions regarding eligibility will be sent to any author whose abstract is accepted for presentation during the ASEE conference. Papers eligible for this award must be peer reviewed and recommendations for consideration be submitted by reviewers or review coordinator (Program Chair).

Best Paper Award

This award promotes and acknowledges engineering and engineering technology educators for the preparation of an exceptional paper sponsored by the International Division each year during the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a plaque, presented at the International Division's Annual Reception, which is held as an event at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Eligibility:
To be eligible, the nominated author(s) must be a member(s) of the International Division and have any or all of the following:

Demonstrate excellence, knowledge, and creative practices that contribute to the quality and advances the scope of engineering and engineering technology education.

Demonstrate excellence in supporting and promoting the International Division.

Present a paper at one of the sessions sponsored by the International Division and their paper must be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings.

Service Award

This award acknowledges and recognizes an individual who has made valuable contributions toward advancing the mission of the International Division. The award consists of a plaque, presented at the International Division's Annual Reception, which is held as an event at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Eligibility:
To be eligible, the nominee must be a member of the International Division, with a minimum of five years of service. Selection will be based primarily upon the quality of contributions, relevant support and promotion of the International Division's mission including, but not limited to:

  • Visionary Leadership: Demonstrating excellence in leadership.

Although non-ASEE international service is important and will be considered, to be eligible, the nominated individual(s) must also be a member of the International Division for at least three years, and have any or all of the following:

Mathematics Division

William T. Guy, Jr. Distinguished Educator and Service Award

The Distinguished Educator and Service Award is presented annually for

  • Excellence in teaching and the ability to inspire students to high levels of accomplishment;
  • Improvement of engineering/applied mathematics education through contributions of research, books, articles, and/or presentations that have a lasting impact on engineering-mathematics education.
  • Participation in the work of mathematics, engineering and/or educational societies, in particular, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), that has led to the improvement of engineering/applied mathematics education.
  • Achievements outside the field of teaching, such as personal professional development in industry, consulting work, inventions, government service, and so on. Such achievements will be considered secondary in importance in selecting the recipient.

Qualification and Eligibility Requirements:
Pertinent nomination information should be submitted by the nominator, including a curriculum vita describing the nominee's professional achievements. Resubmissions are the responsibility of the nominator. Candidate must be a member in good standing of the ASEE Mathematics Division and cannot be a previous recipient of this award.  Members of the award selection committee are ineligible for this award.

As part of the award, the recipient's ASEE membership dues will be paid for one year.  The recipient will also receive an award plaque to be presented at the ASEE Mathematics/Physics Divisions Luncheon held during the ASEE Annual Conference.  An awardee cannot receive the award more than once.

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper from among those that have been submitted to the Mathematics Division and have undergone peer review and been accepted for presentation and publication at the ASEE Annual Conference. Papers must show originality in the area of engineering/mathematics education and address current needs of the field. At least one of the authors of each of the candidate papers must be a member of ASEE. The winner will be announced on the final day of the Annual Conference at which the paper was presented. The award is presented annually and consists of payment of the awardee's ASEE membership and division dues for one year; a commemorative plaque; and a letter of commendation.

The Best Paper Award is presented annually and recognizes the best paper submitted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition Proceedings and presented in a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Division at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition. The award consists of $500, a plaque, and tickets to the Ralph Coates Roe Lecture and Luncheon. A certificate of recognition will be given to all papers nominated for the award.

Best Poster Award

Each year one award is given and those nominated for the award are recognized for the best Mechanical Engineering Division poster at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The best poster award will consist of $200 and a certificate of recognition with all authors' names listed.

Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, posters must be presented at poster sessions sponsored or co-sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Division and be accepted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition Proceedings. Selection will be primarily based on the quality of the poster and its relevance to Mechanical Engineering education.

Outstanding New Mechanical Engineering Educator Award

This award is granted each year and recognizes an individual early in their mechanical engineering education career who has demonstrated the potential, effort and persistence to make sustained and exceptional contributions to mechanical engineering education. The award consists of a $500 honorarium, a plaque, and two tickets to the Ralph Coats Roe Award Lecture and Luncheon at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition where the award is presented. Attendance at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition is required.

Eligibility Requirements: Individuals who have seven or less years of academic experience from the date of their first academic appointment are eligible. Individuals must be members of the Mechanical Engineering Division.

Established in 1992, this award is given annually to up to three individuals who have shown a strong commitment to mechanics education.  The winners are selected on the basis of their exceptional contributions to mechanics education.  Individuals who have no more than five years of academic experience past their first regular academic appointment are eligible.  The award consists of a $200 cash prize, a plaque to be awarded at the Mechanics Division Banquet, registration for the ASEE Annual Conference along with registration to the Mechanics Division Banquet and Business Meeting Luncheon.  Attendance at the ASEE Annual Conference is required.

Eligibility Requirements:
Individuals who have no more than five years of academic experience past their first regular academic appointment are eligible.

The James L. The award is presented at the Engineering Mechanics Division Banquet at the society's Annual Conference.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates for the award must be members of the ASEE Mechanics Engineering Division and must have served the division for a minimum of ten years. No individual may receive the award more than once, and members of the Division's Awards Committee are not eligible for the award until two years after completing their service on that committee.

Nominations may be made by all members of the ASEE Mechanics Division except for those members serving on the Division's Awards Committee. Technological and Engineering Literacy / Philosophy of Engineering (TELPhE) Division Awards

The Technological and Engineering Literacy / Philosophy of Engineering (TELPhE) Division of ASEE, at their annual business meeting on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 adopted the below motion to establish a set of division awards (excerpt from minutes):

“6. Awards: John Heywood motion, Jerry Gravander, second, that TELPhE establish a series of awards as follows: Best Paper, Student Award. And Meritorious Award. The motion followed on a discussion of the papers, panels, and participants in the TELPhE-sponsored sessions at the 2017 annual meeting, noting that Linda Trigg, who presented at a TELPhE session, was still in high school, and attended this year’s ASEE conference (as well as parenting at the 2016 ASEE) conference on her own initiative. The motion was adopted by unanimous consent. It was noted that all division awards must be approved by the ASEE through the division’s PIC chair.”

The TELPhE Division Awards were approved through ASEEeffective April 18, 2018.

Meritorious Award
Description / Purpose: This award recognizes an Individual or organization for significant contributions in promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering, to be awarded as occasions arise.The award is not limited to TELPhE division members.

  • Nominations: Nominations can be submitted by the division membership based on positive contributions in the following areas:
    • Promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering through significant contribution to editorial content (articles, editing, reviewing, etc.),
    • Repeated service as TELPhE officer or program chair
    • Outstanding service on a local, national or international committee promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering.
    • Exemplary contribution to the development or promotion of the technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering body of knowledge
    • Repeated delivery or development of technology and engineering literacy or the philosophy of engineering education in K-12, graduate, post-graduate, public service, or STEM areas.
    • The TELPhE executive committee selects the recipient from the nominations solicited and received by the Immediate Past President.
  • Nomination Process :Immediate Past Division Chair solicits nominations in February. Nominations are submitted by March 30th. Award selection in concert with the executive committee is made by May 1st.

Best Paper
Description/Purpose: To annually recognize the best paper written and presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in the TELPhE Division.

  • Eligibility Criteria: The award winning paper will:
    • Contribute significant extensions of TELPhE concepts as well as to the literature.
    • Have effective integration of analytical and philosophical concerns as a primary premise.
    • Include high quality design of the study and collection of data where appropriate.
    • Make conclusions with broad application to TELPhE.
  • Nomination Process: All final papers submitted to TELPhE for presentation in a TELPhE-sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition are eligible.
  • Judging: By February of the program year, the Program Chair appoints a committee of at least three TELPhE members who have published papers. TELPhE authors whose papers are under consideration are not eligible to serve on the judging committee. The committee will evaluate each paper on the above criteria and make the award selection by May 1st.

Student Award
Description / Purpose: To annually recognize the best high school, undergraduate, or graduate student paper, work-in-process, or poster presentation presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in the TELPhE Division, with the student as being the primary investigator / researcher, and that the paper makes a significant contribution the literature of technology and engineering literacy / philosophy of engineering field.

  • Eligibility/Criteria: All student authored ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition TELPhE Division papers, work-in-process, or poster presentations are eligible. An award winning paper, work-in-process, or poster presentation will:
    • Be student authored work, with appropriate confirmation included in the paper documentation from the student’s supervisor or academic mentor.
    • Describe high-quality student work.
    • Be significant and relevant to current issues in TELPhE.
    • Present findings that are applicableto a broad audience.
    • Be extremely well-written.
    • Be presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.
  • Nomination Process:All final student-authored papers submitted to TELPhE for presentation in a TELPhE-sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition are eligible.

Denice D. Denton Best Paper Award

The Denice D. Denton Best Paper Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of engineering education with a particular focus on the needs of women engineering faculty and issues related to the recruitment, retention and graduation of women engineering students. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and an award certificate and is presented at the Women in Engineering Division reception at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant

The ASEE Women in Engineering Division will award up to two grants to travel to the ASEE Annual Conference as part of its Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant (AEG) program. Each grant consists of reimbursement of receipted registration, travel, food, and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of $2,000.  Grant recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the conference, including the WIED Business lunch and Reception, and one WIED-sponsored workshop.

Goals of the AEG Program:

To build capacity for the engineering education community through "apprenticeship" and mentoring to members of the community who are at the entry/launch point of their engineering education career.

Eligibility:

  • Women planning to pursue a career in engineering education, who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation in teaching and/or potential for substantial contributions to the field. The nominee does not need to be a member of ASEE.
  • Eligible women are graduate students, post-docs, lecturers, research associates, and other non-tenure track faculty. Tenure-track women faculty who have been not more than three years into their first faculty position are also eligible.

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Division

Award for Early Achievement in Education

The objective of the BAE Early Achievement in Education Award is to recognize evidence of outstanding teaching performance and/or scholarly achievements in engineering education that occurs unusually early in a faculty member’s professional career.

Eligibility: Tenure-track faculty member (not yet awarded tenure) with not more than six years of experience post-Ph.D. (or other appropriate terminal degree), excluding post-doctoral work, in the field of biological and/or agricultural engineering.  Recipient must be an ASEE member and a member of the BAE Division at the time the award is made at the ASEE Annual Meeting.  The recipient must attend the meeting to receive the award.

Number of Awards: One per year, although the BAE Awards Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any recipient in a given year.

Nature of Award:  Recipient will receive full early-bird registration for the upcoming ASEE Annual Meeting.  Recipient is also asked to give an invited lecture on her or his teaching methods, philosophy, and/or accomplishments in a BAE Division-sponsored session at the same meeting.

Nomination:  Nomination for this award shall be made by the nominee’s department chair.

Criteria: Selection is based on evidence of outstanding performance as a teacher and/or scholarly engineering education researcher, as documented by students and peers.

Selection Process:  The Awards Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair, and the Awards Chair, will select an award winner from the pool of nominees.  Members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the years that they serve.

Indicate the range of educational responsibilities which have been performed, describe the aspects of the performance which distinguish the nominee, and provide specific evidence of meritorious performance.
  3. Nominee vita (4 pages maximum): An abbreviated current vita that includes all information related to the award.
  4. Statement by the Nominee (2 pages maximum): Include a statement of teaching and engineering education philosophy prepared by the nominee.
  5. Letters: (6 letters maximum): This section should be prefaced with a list of the names and positions of the letter writers and an indication of their relevance to the nomination. Letters should come from current and former students, as well as colleagues. When possible, comments from colleagues should reflect team teaching and education service experiences, observations, or other first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s performance.
  6. Student Evaluation Data: Student evaluation information should be displayed in summary form condensed to no more than two pages, including an appropriate range of courses or offerings and reflecting especially the most recent years. Student evaluations should be displayed in the context of college or department norms with a clear explanation of the characteristics being evaluated and the rating scale being used.
  7. Optional Appendix: Any additional documentation of pedagogical innovation or scholarship, classroom performance, vita information, letters or testimonials may be added as an appendix. Note that nominees are not served well in the evaluation process by the submission of a large body of uncondensed material.

Other Information

As part of the nomination packet, please include a 100 word (maximum) paragraph about the nominee. If your nominee is selected, the paragraph will be included in the printed program for the ASEE Annual Meeting and in related news releases. Note the following guidelines:

  1. Full name of nominee, with middle initial;
  2. Specific accomplishments to support why the nominee should receive the award.  Include appropriate examples of teaching and scholarly engineering educational accomplishments; and
  3. Summary statement should be extracted from the supporting documents and should not include any material not already in the nomination package.

 

Deadline and Submission

The complete package of nomination materials must be received six months in advance of the Annual National ASEE Meeting at which the award is to be given, typically January 15.  The nomination package should be submitted electronically (pdf) via email to the BAE awards chair.
 

Award for Excellence in Teaching Materials and Methods in Biological and Agricultural Engineering

This award, sponsored by the ASEE Biological and Agricultural Engineering Division, recognizes an individual or group of individuals in the development and dissemination of excellent teaching materials and methods in Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and an inscribed plaque which are presented during the ASEE Annual Conference.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements:
Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality and effectiveness of Biological and Agricultural Engineering instructional materials and methods. Additional factors that may be considered include: the scope of utilization of the nominees' materials or methods, the innovative nature of the material or method, the nominees' involvement in teaching Biological and Agricultural Engineering students, and ASEE membership.
 

Best Paper Award

This award recognizes the best paper accepted for presentation in a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) Division at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.

Award:
The award consists of a plaque for each author and a $400 honorarium to be equally divided among all authors. The award is presented at the BAE Division Business Meeting during the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.

Criteria and Qualifications:
To be considered for this award, the paper must be presented at the Society’s Annual Conference and Exposition and published in the conference proceedings in the year awarded. The paper must have been peer-reviewed, and the final version must have been accepted for publication through the Division’s review process.

To be considered for this award a paper must meet the following criteria:

  • The paper’s author(s) must demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of education in the biological and agricultural engineering discipline.
  • The paper must advance the biological and agricultural engineering education literature.
  • The paper must be well written and, as such, reflect positively on the BAE Division and the society.

Selection Process

All papers presented at a BAE Division sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and published in the conference proceedings will automatically be qualified.  Special consideration will be given to those papers nominated by reviewers as part of the annual division peer-review process.  The Best Paper Award Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair, and the Awards Chair, will select an award winner from the pool of eligible papers.  The members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the year that they serve.

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper presented in a session sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division during the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition and published in the Annual Conference & Exposition proceedings.  The award consists of $200 and a plaque, which is presented to the author(s) at the Biomedical Engineering Division’s Awards Banquet at the Annual Conference & Exposition in which the paper is presented.  To receive this award, the recipient(s) must be present at the BED Awards Banquet.  The award is based solely on written papers judged according to the following criteria:

  • The extent to which the paper advances knowledge or creative practice in the field of Biomedical Engineering Education
  • The utility of information to a wide range of Biomedical Engineering Educators
  • Clarity of writing, originality, innovation, and documented results.

Selection Process
Nominations for this award will be based upon recommendations submitted by reviewers as part of the annual division peer-review process.  The Award Selection Committee, consisting of the Program Chair, the Division Chair and the Vice Chair for Career Development and Awards, will select an award winner from the pool of nominated papers.  The members of the Awards Selection Committee are not eligible to receive the award in the year that they serve.  The award winner will be automatically nominated for competition for the PIC II Best Paper Award.  

 

Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award

This award recognizes the contribution of Theo C. Pilkington as a true pioneer in Biomedical Engineering who contributed significantly to the advancement of Biomedical Engineering Education.

The Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) of ASEE anually awards the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award. This award is conferred by the division for significant contributions to biomedical engineering education as evidenced by the development of successful undergraduate or graduate level programs, curricula, publications as well as by membership and activities in ASEE/BED and other biomedical engineering organizations. The award consists of a commemorative plaque and a check for $350.00.

Best Poster Award

The Best Poster Award is presented annually and recognizes the best poster in a session of the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition that is sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division. Posters are typically Work-in-Progress submissions to the Annual Conference. If the winner submits a full paper on the same topic to the Biomedical Engineering Division of the ASEE Annual Conference in the following two years, the winner will be reimbursed for the paper submission fee (~ $100).

Selection process:
The Division Chair, Program Chair and Program Chair-Elect (or alternates appointed by the Division Chair) will form a committee that selects the best poster at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition. Selection will be primarily based on the quality of the poster, its presentation, and relevance to Biomedical Engineering education. To be eligible, posters must be presented at a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division and the corresponding paper must have been accepted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference Proceedings.

 

Biomedical Engineering Teaching Award

This award is conferred by the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) to recognize contributions in the field of biomedical engineering education by new faculty members as evidenced by innovative teaching materials, curricula, textbooks and/or professional papers and by activity in ASEE/BED and/or other biomedical engineering organizations. Awardees must have a primary educational role in biomedical engineering, either through a dedicated BME/Bioengineering program or through a related engineering program. Faculty members who have no more than 5 years (by June 1 of the year in which the award is given) of teaching experience with primary course responsibility at the university/college or community college level are eligible for this award. The award consists of $350 and a commemorative plaque.

BED Travel Award

The Biomedical Engineering Travel Award supports the development of talented engineering educators by introducing graduate students and postdoctoral associates to the biomedical engineering education research and scholarship community. There will be at most two grants of $500 per year to subsidize travel to the ASEE Annual Conference. Recipients will be recognized at the annual BED Awards Banquet.

Who is eligible?
Applicants should be graduate students or postdoctoral associates in a biomedical engineering program or related discipline. Applicants should currently be pursuing, or be planning to pursue, a career that includes a significant emphasis on engineering education.

How does one apply?
Candidates self-nominate by completing an application packet.

What will the application packet include?
A completed application form (2 pages) that includes:

  • Professional contact and other information
  • A personal statement of teaching experience, career goals, and reasons for wanting to attend the ASEE Annual Meeting.
  • A current CV including but not limited to: education, publications and dissertations, instructional activities, and any educational research activities. Instructional and educational research activities should be emphasized.


By what criteria will my application be judged?

  • Career goals that include teaching as a major component;
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or an instructor;
  • Financial need and career stage;
  • All other things being equal, preference will be given to applicants who are authors or coauthors of an ASEE paper that year.

Thomas and Donna Edgar CACHE Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education

This award, sponsored by the CACHE Corporation, is presented for significant contributions in the development of computer aids for chemical engineering education. Lectureship Award

This award, currently sponsored by the ASEE Chemical Engineering Division, is presented to a distinguished engineering educator to recognize and to encourage outstanding achievement in an important field of fundamental chemical engineering theory or practice. The individual shall demonstrate achievement through the formulation of fundamental theory or principles, improvements of lasting influence to chemical engineering education with books and/or articles, and the demonstration of success as a teacher. In addition, evidence of the ability to conduct original, sound, and productive research, and an interest in the progression of chemical engineering through participation in professional and educational societies shall be demonstrated. The recipient presents a lecture at the ASEE annual conference. The award consists of a $3,000 honorarium, $500 travel allowance, and a commemorative plaque presented at the Chemical Engineering Division Banquet of the ASEE Annual Conference.

William H. Corcoran Award

This award, sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, is presented each year to the author of the most outstanding article published in Chemical Engineering Education. The award consists of a small honorarium or travel expenses and a commemorative plaque.

Ray W. Fahien Award

This award is given in honor of Ray Fahien, who was editor of Chemical Engineering Education from 1967-1995 and who was effectively the founding father of the journal, establishing it as a premier publication vehicle in the field of chemical engineering education. Professor Fahien selflessly gave his time and talents to advance pedagogical scholarship, particularly in the careers of young educators, through his dedication to the journal and the profession. The award, which is given annually to an educator who has shown evidence of vision and contribution to chemical engineering education, consists of a $1,000 stipend and a plaque to be presented at the Chemical Engineering Division Banquet of the ASEE Annual Conference. Educators who have been faculty members for not more than 10 years as of July 1 in the year of the award are eligible.

Nominees will be evaluated based upon two equally weighted criteria:

  • Outstanding Teaching Effectiveness. Nominees must demonstrate evidence of excellence in the training of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the classroom or through supervision of independent study projects. This can be demonstrated by such evidence as standardized student evaluations over a three year period along with letters from students or former students (not more than four).
  • Educational Scholarship. The award recipient should have made significant contributions to chemical engineering education that go beyond his/her own institution. Examples of such evidence include development of instructional methods or materials (textbooks, instructional software, assessment instruments), along with the associated publications in refereed scholarly journals and conference proceedings. This evidence may be supported by the applicant's teaching dossier, reprints of papers and up to four supporting letters, three of which should be outside the candidate's institution.

Lifetime Achievement in Chemical Engineering Pedagogical Scholarship

This award, normally given for lifetime achievement, recognizes a sustained career of pedagogical scholarship which not only caused innovative and substantial changes, but also inspired younger educators to new behaviors which benefit students in Chemical Engineering.

The Award:
The award will be presented at the Chemical Engineering Division banquet at the ASEE Annual Conference on an as-merited basis, not necessarily annually. The award consists of a plaque prepared at the editorial offices of Chemical Engineering Education. Acceptance of the award implies the obligation to attend the Chemical Engineering Division Awards Banquet at the ASEE Annual Conference.

ChE Division Engineering Education Mentoring Recipient Grant

The purpose of this award is to attract more faculty members to the American Society for Engineering Education, and in particular, the Chemical Engineering Division. The award consists of a certificate and a ticket to the Chemical Engineering Division banquet, which is held at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Criteria:
More than one grant may be given annually. A faculty member may apply for this grant by the last day of February. The application consists of a curriculum vitae and a maximum one-page statement of interests in educational scholarship. A successful nomination will be from a faculty member who has an interest in educational scholarship and involvement in ASEE but has not attended a conference in the past five years. Self nominations are also allowed.

ChE Division Young Faculty / Future Faculty Mentoring and Travel Grant

All chemical engineering or chemistry faculty within their first two years of teaching, or graduate students in chemical engineering or a related field and intending to go into teaching as a career are eligible. There will be at most one or two grants per year.

Applications are due October 31 of each year. Applicants must have submitted an abstract to meet the mid-October deadline for the following summer’s ASEE conference. For faculty the application consists of a curriculum vita, a maximum one-page statement of interest in educational scholarship and a copy of any submitted abstracts. For graduate students the application consists of a one-page nomination letter by a faculty member who is a member of ASEE, the student's resume, and the abstract of any ASEE talks with the student as a coauthor. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the awards chairs and directors. If there is a conflict of interest, the directors will identify another member of the committee. Award announcements will be within two weeks of the application submission.

The amount of the grant is $900, intended to subsidize travel to the conference, and will include a ticket to the ChE Division Banquet. A condition of the grant is that the winner attends the meeting and presents their paper. The grant will be presented at the ChE Division Banquet. The grant winner(s) will be provided with a ChE Division mentor (an individual determined by the ASEE CHED executive committee) who will meet with the grant winner for both formal and informal interactions during the meeting. Preference will be given to first-time attendees at the ASEE Annual Conference. For graduate students the grant is intended to build upon the existing ASEE "Bring-A-Student" program.

The Civil Engineering Division Best Paper Award recognizes the author(s) of the most significant paper published or presented in the ASEE Civil Engineering Division activities during the previous year. George K. Wadlin Distinguished Service Award

Gerald R. Seeley Fellowship

This award was established in memory of Gerald R. Seeley, a chamion of civil engineering education and a past chair of the ASEE Civil Engineering Division. The award encourages new civil engineering faculty members to become active in the Civil Engineering Division of ASEE by providing a monetary award to defray expenses associated with attendance at the Annual Conference. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and a certificate.

1. Be a current faculty member in civil engineering or a closely related field.

Willard D. Cheek Exemplary Service Award

The Willard D. Cheek Exemplary Service Award is given on special occasion to a member of the College Industry Partnerships Division of ASEE. Best Paper Award

The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize the writing of outstanding papers for publication in the proceedings of sessions sponsored by the IS Division during the ASEE Annual Conference.  The award consists of an engraved plaque of recognition and a certificate.  The recipient will be required to attend the division annual business meeting, held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference, to receive the award.

Criteria: The paper must be presented at the conference to qualify for the award, although the award committee’s judgment is based solely on the quality of the written paper.  The winning paper will be based upon the following considerations:

The award consists of a commemorative plaque to be presented at the ECE Division's business meeting at the ASEE Annual Conference.

The recipient of the ECE Meritorious Service Award will be selected by the Awards Selection Committee as specified in the bylaws of the ECE Division. Eugene L. Grant Award

An honorarium is presented annually by the Engineering Economy Division to the author(s) of the best paper published in The Engineering Economist, a quarterly journal jointly published by the ASEE Engineering Economy Division and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award recognizes the author(s) of the best paper presented from the ASEE Engineering Economy Division at the ASEE Annual Conference. All papers that are accepted by the Engineering Economy Division and presented at the conference are eligible for this award. Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award, which consists of a certificate of merit, recognizes the best new scholarly paper in engineering information which is published during the year prior to the year in which the award is given.

Best Poster Award

The Best Poster Award, which consists of a framed certificate, recognizes the presenter who displays a clear, well-organized poster that most effectively conveys the content of the poster. Single or multiple presenters are eligible. The award is presented at the Engineering Libraries Division Poster Session at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Innovation in Access to Engineering Information Award

The Best Reference Work Award, which consists of a certificate of merit, is given for the best new reference work in engineering information which is published/released during the year prior to which the award is made.

Engineering Management Division

Best Paper Award

This award recognizes the best paper accepted for presentation in a session sponsored by the division at the Society’s Annual Conference and Exposition. To be considered for this award the paper must be published in the conference proceedings in the year awarded. The paper must have been peer-reviewed and the final version must have been accepted for publication through the Division review process. The award consists of an engraved plaque which is presented to each author at the division’s banquet held during the Society’s Annual Conference.

Award Criteria:

  • The paper's author(s) must demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of engineering management education.
  • The paper must advance the engineering education literature in the field of engineering management.
  • The paper must be well written and as such reflect credit on the Division and the Society.

Best Presentation Award

This award recognizes the best presentation for an accepted paper for the Engineering Management Division at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The award, which promotes the development of presentation skills among the division member and its guests, consists of a suitably engraved plaque for each presenter of a paper winning the award.

To be considered for this award, the presentation must be made at the Society’s Annual Conference with a division sponsored technical session in the year awarded. The presentation should be based on a paper that has been peer-reviewed and the final version accepted for publication through the division review process. The award will be presented at the Division’s Banquet during the following year’s ASEE Annual Conference.

Bernard R. Sarchet Award

This award recognizes lifetime achievement in engineering management education. Named after one of the founding fathers of the academic discipline of engineering management, the award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions over an extended period of time to the discipline and the division and who exemplifies the highest standards of the professorate in engineering management. The award consists of an engraved plaque and a $500 honorarium.

Award Criteria:

  • Current or past membership in the engineering management professorate. The engineering management professorate is defined for this award as teaching in a university program, which offers degrees in engineering management, management of technology, and other closely related areas.
  • Exemplary service to the engineering management discipline. Exemplars would be (1) service as a chair, head, or program director of a major engineering management program; (2) service as editor, associate editor, reviewer of a peer-reviewed publication in the discipline; or (3) a national reputation for promoting the academic discipline of engineering management.
  • Exemplary service to the Engineering Management Division of ASEE. Exemplars would be (1) service in a leadership role in ASEE or the Division, (2) active support of Division programs and initiatives, (3) service to the professorate in engineering management, and/or (4) service to the students in engineering management programs.
  • A national reputation in engineering management through service to the practice of engineering management. Exemplars of this would be (1) membership and office in a relevant engineering management professional organization, (2) a publication record promoting engineering management practice, or (3) other service to engineering management practitioners.

This award recognizes exemplary service to the Engineering Management Division. Named after one of the founding fathers of the academic discipline of engineering management, the award is presented to a member of the division who has provided significant service to the division. Environmental Engineering Division

Outstanding Presenter Award

The Environmental Engineering Division is committed to furthering excellence in engineering education and in environmental stewardship.  Each year an award is given to the presenter who best represents the Environmental Engineering Division through a combination of the quality of a written paper and its presentation at the ASEE Annual Conference.

The award is presented each year at the Environmental Engineering Division business meeting held during the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a $250 honorarium, a certificate of recognition and a commemorative plaque.  In the case of co-presenters, individual certificates and plaques will be presented, but the honorarium will be split among the number of presenters.

Candidates for the award must be members of the ASEE Environmental Engineering Division.  The paper must be presented by the author(s) at the division's business meeting.  The paper must be an original paper written specifically for and published in the Proceedings of the ASEE Annual Conference.  It is permissible that the paper be of similar content to other professional papers written by the author(s).

Keating Award for Innovation and Leadership in Lifelong Learning in Graduate Engineering Education

This award is established in memory of Donald A. Keating, who, during his association with the ASEE Graduate Studies Division, epitomized the best in innovative graduate engineering education and scholarship. Keating was a visionary in developing and creating the National Collaborative for Engineering Graduate Education Reform Strategy. The strength of the National Collaborative vision is sustained by a strong U.S. system of professional graduate engineering education directly relevant to growing the U.S. engineering workforce in industry, which is the primary mainstay of our competitiveness as a nation. The award is to celebrate the passion, vision, and integrity of Donald Keating’s leadership in development of ideas, content, and programs that foster the ideals of professional master’s and doctoral degree programs in the pursuit of engineering, leadership, and technology innovation.

This award is given to an individual who over a period of time demonstrates commitment and leadership to the ASEE Graduate Studies Division, especially in the area of professional graduate education, as was demonstrated by Donald A. Keating. This award is reserved to recognize an extraordinary level of support for professional graduate education. At most, one award will be made annually.

The Award:
The award consists of an etched plaque and a $250 honorarium towards travel to the ASEE Annual Conference where the award will be presented at the division's business meeting. The awardee must be present at this meeting to accept the award.

Criteria and Qualifications:
The award winner must be a Graduate Studies Division member who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and leadership in fostering graduate programs to nurture life-long learning for innovation; produced documented scholarship in the area of engineering graduate education; and contributed service to the Graduate Studies Division. An individual may receive this award only once.

Nomination and Selection Process:
Each year, the Director for Collaboration and Awards of the Graduate Studies Division will solicit nominations between October 1 and February 1. Self nominations are permitted. No current member of the division's Executive Committee or of any other committee is eligible. Nominations should include justification for making the award to the candidate and may include suggestions for additional recommendations.

Industrial Engineering Division

Best Paper Award

The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize industrial engineering educators for the preparation and presentation of outstanding papers at sessions sponsored by the IE Division during the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a plaque of recognition for first place, and a letter of recognition for second place (runner-up).

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, papers should be presented at sessions sponsored by the IE Division and be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings. Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality of the written paper and its relevance to IE education.

Nominations: Announcement of the award competition will be included in the call for papers for the IE Division. Papers eligible for this award must be peer reviewed and recommendations for consideration be submitted by reviewers or review coordinator (Program Chair). Special Nomination Instructions: The Award Selection Committee will select an award winner and a runner-up. The award winner will be automatically nominated for competition for PIC I Best Paper Award. In the event that the IE Division nominee shall receive the PIC I Award, the runner-up would be selected for the IE Best Paper Award.

· Current or past membership in the industrial engineering professorate, which is defined for this award as teaching in a university program that offers one or more degrees in industrial engineering.

· Exemplary service to the industrial engineering discipline. Exemplars would be (1) service as a chair, head, or program director of a major industrial engineering program; (2) service as editor, associate editor, reviewer of a peer-reviewed publication in the discipline; or (3) a national reputation for promoting the academic discipline of industrial engineering.

· Exemplary service to the Industrial Engineering Division of ASEE. The purpose of the award is to encourage and recognize new industrial engineering educators for the preparation and presentation of outstanding papers at sessions sponsored by the IE Division during the ASEE Annual Conference.

The recipient will be awarded $250 per author up to $500 per paper. Senior faculty are eligible for the award as co-authors, but not for the monetary award. The award also includes a plaque of recognition.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements: Papers should be submitted and presented by tenure-track faculty or faculty having less than seven years of full-time teaching experience. The paper should be presented at a session organized by the IE Division, and be accepted for publication in the conference proceedings. Selection among individual or team nominees will be primarily based upon the quality of the written paper and its relevance to IE education.

Nominations: Announcement of the award will be included in the call for papers for the IE Division. Questions regarding eligibility will be sent to any author whose abstract is accepted for presentation during the ASEE conference. To be eligible, the nominee must be a member of the International Division, with a minimum of five years of service. Selection will be based primarily upon the quality of contributions, relevant support and promotion of the International Division's mission including, but not limited to:

The Sterling Olmsted Award

The Sterling Olmsted award honors those who have made distinguished contributions to the development and teaching of liberal arts in engineering education. It is the highest award given by the Liberal Education/Engineering & Society Division of the ASEE.

Mathematics Division

William T. Guy, Jr. Distinguished Educator and Service Award

The Distinguished Educator and Service Award is presented annually for

  • Excellence in teaching and the ability to inspire students to high levels of accomplishment;
  • Improvement of engineering/applied mathematics education through contributions of research, books, articles, and/or presentations that have a lasting impact on engineering-mathematics education.
  • Participation in the work of mathematics, engineering and/or educational societies, in particular, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), that has led to the improvement of engineering/applied mathematics education.
  • Achievements outside the field of teaching, such as personal professional development in industry, consulting work, inventions, government service, and so on. Such achievements will be considered secondary in importance in selecting the recipient.

Qualification and Eligibility Requirements:
Pertinent nomination information should be submitted by the nominator, including a curriculum vita describing the nominee's professional achievements. Resubmissions are the responsibility of the nominator. Candidate must be a member in good standing of the ASEE Mathematics Division and cannot be a previous recipient of this award.  Members of the award selection committee are ineligible for this award.

As part of the award, the recipient's ASEE membership dues will be paid for one year.  The recipient will also receive an award plaque to be presented at the ASEE Mathematics/Physics Divisions Luncheon held during the ASEE Annual Conference.  An awardee cannot receive the award more than once.

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper from among those that have been submitted to the Mathematics Division and have undergone peer review and been accepted for presentation and publication at the ASEE Annual Conference. Papers must show originality in the area of engineering/mathematics education and address current needs of the field. At least one of the authors of each of the candidate papers must be a member of ASEE. The winner will be announced on the final day of the Annual Conference at which the paper was presented. The award is presented annually and consists of payment of the awardee's ASEE membership and division dues for one year; a commemorative plaque; and a letter of commendation.

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award is presented annually and recognizes the best paper submitted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition Proceedings and presented in a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Division at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition. The award consists of $500, a plaque, and tickets to the Ralph Coates Roe Lecture and Luncheon. A certificate of recognition will be given to all papers nominated for the award.

Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, papers must be presented at sessions sponsored or co-sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Division and be accepted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition Proceedings. Selection will be primarily based on the quality of the written paper and its relevance to Mechanical Engineering education.

Selection Process: Potential best papers are nominated through the ASEE peer review process. The Division Chair, Program Chair and Program Chair-Elect will make the selection of the best paper from among papers nominated for the award by the paper reviewers. The best paper winner will be automatically nominated for competition for the PIC I Best Paper Award.

Best Poster Award

Each year one award is given and those nominated for the award are recognized for the best Mechanical Engineering Division poster at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The best poster award will consist of $200 and a certificate of recognition with all authors' names listed.

Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible, posters must be presented at poster sessions sponsored or co-sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Division and be accepted for publication in the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition Proceedings. Selection will be primarily based on the quality of the poster and its relevance to Mechanical Engineering education.

Selection Process: The Division Chair, Program Chair and Program Chair-Elect will select the best poster at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The best poster will be awarded at the following year's ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.

Outstanding New Mechanical Engineering Educator Award

This award is granted each year and recognizes an individual early in their mechanical engineering education career who has demonstrated the potential, effort and persistence to make sustained and exceptional contributions to mechanical engineering education. The award consists of a $500 honorarium, a plaque, and two tickets to the Ralph Coats Roe Award Lecture and Luncheon at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition where the award is presented. Attendance at the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition is required.

Eligibility Requirements: Individuals who have seven or less years of academic experience from the date of their first academic appointment are eligible. Individuals must be members of the Mechanical Engineering Division.

The Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award is awarded annually by the Mechanics Division for distinguished and outstanding contributions to engineering mechanics education.  The award consists of an engraved plaque and paid registration for the ASEE Annual Conference and the Mechanics Division Banquet.  The award is presented at the Mechanics Division Banquet at the society's Annual Conference.  Attendance at the ASEE Annual Conference is required.

Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russell Johnston, Jr. Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award

Established in 1992, this award is given annually to up to three individuals who have shown a strong commitment to mechanics education.  The winners are selected on the basis of their exceptional contributions to mechanics education.  Individuals who have no more than five years of academic experience past their first regular academic appointment are eligible.  The award consists of a $200 cash prize, a plaque to be awarded at the Mechanics Division Banquet, registration for the ASEE Annual Conference along with registration to the Mechanics Division Banquet and Business Meeting Luncheon.  Attendance at the ASEE Annual Conference is required.

Eligibility Requirements:
Individuals who have no more than five years of academic experience past their first regular academic appointment are eligible.

Nominations:

James L. Meriam Service Award

The James L. Meriam Service Award recognizes significant service to the ASEE Engineering Mechanics Division as characterized by notable leadership, significant contributions, and prolonged and dedicated service. The award, sponsored by John Wiley & Sons, consists of an engraved plaque and paid registration for the ASEE Annual Conference. The award is presented at the Engineering Mechanics Division Banquet at the society's Annual Conference.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates for the award must be members of the ASEE Mechanics Engineering Division and must have served the division for a minimum of ten years. No individual may receive the award more than once, and members of the Division's Awards Committee are not eligible for the award until two years after completing their service on that committee.

Nominations:
Nominations may be made by all members of the ASEE Mechanics Division except for those members serving on the Division's Awards Committee. Each nomination package must include a chronological listing of the candidate's service to the Division and a narrative statement detailing the significant elements of the service. Nominations should be sent to the chair of the Division's Awards Committee and must be received by January 31 of the year in which the award is to be presented. Any nominee not selected in the year of the original nomination will be automatically reconsidered the following year.

Best Presentation Award

The award is granted each year and recognizes individuals for the overall best paper presentation in the Mechanics Division sessions at the ASEE Annual Conference. The award is presented at the Mechanics Division banquet during the ASEE Annual Conference one year after the paper was presented. The award consists of a plaque and a ticket to the Mechanics Division banquet during the ASEE Annual Conference. Attendance at this banquet is required of the recipient of this award.

Multidisciplinary Engineering Division

Best Paper Award


This award recognizes outstanding papers submitted to the Multidisciplinary Engineering Division sessions held at the ASEE Annual Conference. The award consists of a $100 honorarium and a framed certificate. The award is presented at the division's business meeting at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Qualifications and Eligibility: To qualify for the Best Paper Award, authors must submit a paper through the division's submission process. One of the authors of the selected best paper must be a member of the Multidisciplinary Engineering Division interest area and one of the co-authors must present the paper at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Distinguished Educator and Service Award


The Distinguished Educator and Service Award, consisting of a framed certificate, is granted annually by the Physics and Engineering Physics Division for distinguished contributions to the teaching of physics to engineering and engineering technology students and for service to the division. The award is presented to a member of the Physics and Engineering Physics Division at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Systems Engineering Division

Best Paper Award

This award recognizes the best paper accepted for presentation in a session sponsored or co-sponsored by the Systems Engineering Constituent Committee at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition. The award consists of a certificate which will be presented at the Committee’s banquet held during the Annual Conference.

Criteria: To be considered for this award, the paper must be published in the conference proceedings in the year awarded. The paper must have been peer-reviewed and the final version must have been accepted for publication through the Committee’s review process.

Eligible papers must meet the following standards:

The paper’s author(s) must demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of systems engineering education.

The paper must advance the engineering education literature in the field or of systems engineering.

The paper must be well written and, as such, reflect positively on the Systems Engineering Constituent Committee and the Society.

Technological and Engineering Literacy / Philosophy of Engineering (TELPhE) Division Awards

The Technological and Engineering Literacy / Philosophy of Engineering (TELPhE) Division of ASEE, at their annual business meeting on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 adopted the below motion to establish a set of division awards (excerpt from minutes):

“6. Awards: John Heywood motion, Jerry Gravander, second, that TELPhE establish a series of awards as follows: Best Paper, Student Award. And Meritorious Award. The motion followed on a discussion of the papers, panels, and participants in the TELPhE-sponsored sessions at the 2017 annual meeting, noting that Linda Trigg, who presented at a TELPhE session, was still in high school, and attended this year’s ASEE conference (as well as parenting at the 2016 ASEE) conference on her own initiative. The motion was adopted by unanimous consent. It was noted that all division awards must be approved by the ASEE through the division’s PIC chair.”

The TELPhE Division Awards were approved through ASEEeffective April 18, 2018.

Meritorious Award
Description / Purpose: This award recognizes an Individual or organization for significant contributions in promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering, to be awarded as occasions arise.The award is not limited to TELPhE division members.

  • Nominations: Nominations can be submitted by the division membership based on positive contributions in the following areas:
    • Promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering through significant contribution to editorial content (articles, editing, reviewing, etc.),
    • Repeated service as TELPhE officer or program chair
    • Outstanding service on a local, national or international committee promoting technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering.
    • Exemplary contribution to the development or promotion of the technology and engineering literacy, or the philosophy of engineering body of knowledge
    • Repeated delivery or development of technology and engineering literacy or the philosophy of engineering education in K-12, graduate, post-graduate, public service, or STEM areas.
    • The TELPhE executive committee selects the recipient from the nominations solicited and received by the Immediate Past President.
  • Nomination Process :Immediate Past Division Chair solicits nominations in February. Nominations are submitted by March 30th. Award selection in concert with the executive committee is made by May 1st.

Best Paper
Description/Purpose: To annually recognize the best paper written and presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in the TELPhE Division.

  • Eligibility Criteria: The award winning paper will:
    • Contribute significant extensions of TELPhE concepts as well as to the literature.
    • Have effective integration of analytical and philosophical concerns as a primary premise.
    • Include high quality design of the study and collection of data where appropriate.
    • Make conclusions with broad application to TELPhE.
  • Nomination Process: All final papers submitted to TELPhE for presentation in a TELPhE-sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition are eligible.
  • Judging: By February of the program year, the Program Chair appoints a committee of at least three TELPhE members who have published papers. TELPhE authors whose papers are under consideration are not eligible to serve on the judging committee. The committee will evaluate each paper on the above criteria and make the award selection by May 1st.

Student Award
Description / Purpose: To annually recognize the best high school, undergraduate, or graduate student paper, work-in-process, or poster presentation presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in the TELPhE Division, with the student as being the primary investigator / researcher, and that the paper makes a significant contribution the literature of technology and engineering literacy / philosophy of engineering field.

  • Eligibility/Criteria: All student authored ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition TELPhE Division papers, work-in-process, or poster presentations are eligible. An award winning paper, work-in-process, or poster presentation will:
    • Be student authored work, with appropriate confirmation included in the paper documentation from the student’s supervisor or academic mentor.
    • Describe high-quality student work.
    • Be significant and relevant to current issues in TELPhE.
    • Present findings that are applicableto a broad audience.
    • Be extremely well-written.
    • Be presented at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.
  • Nomination Process:All final student-authored papers submitted to TELPhE for presentation in a TELPhE-sponsored session at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition are eligible.

Women in Engineering Division

Denice D. Denton Best Paper Award

The Denice D. Denton Best Paper Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of engineering education with a particular focus on the needs of women engineering faculty and issues related to the recruitment, retention and graduation of women engineering students. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and an award certificate and is presented at the Women in Engineering Division reception at the ASEE Annual Conference.

Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant

The ASEE Women in Engineering Division will award up to two grants to travel to the ASEE Annual Conference as part of its Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant (AEG) program. Each grant consists of reimbursement of receipted registration, travel, food, and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of $2,000.  Grant recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the conference, including the WIED Business lunch and Reception, and one WIED-sponsored workshop.

Goals of the AEG Program:

To build capacity for the engineering education community through "apprenticeship" and mentoring to members of the community who are at the entry/launch point of their engineering education career.

Eligibility:

  • Women planning to pursue a career in engineering education, who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation in teaching and/or potential for substantial contributions to the field. The nominee does not need to be a member of ASEE.
  • Eligible women are graduate students, post-docs, lecturers, research associates, and other non-tenure track faculty. Tenure-track women faculty who have been not more than three years into their first faculty position are also eligible.

How to Apply:

  • Candidates can either be self-nominated or nominated by an advisor, mentor, supervisor, or colleague.
  • Nominees should complete a nomination packet as described below and submit to the WIED Director of Awards - http://www.asee.org/member-resources/groups/divisions/women-in-engineering/officers.
