Section Outstanding Teaching Award
This award is given by each ASEE section, with support, where possible, from local industry. The award, which focuses on outstanding classroom performance, recognizes teachers of engineering and engineering technology students and serves as an incentive to make further significant contributions to teaching.
The Award: The award consists of a certificate, prepared by ASEE National Headquarters, and an appropriate honorarium, where possible, presented by the local section. Each section shall determine its own level of the honorarium and fund the honorarium from its Banking and Accounting Services System fund. Presentations are made at the section annual meeting with notation in the ASEE Annual Awards Banquet Program.
Qualifications: Candidates may be teachers of any subject included in an ABET/CEAB accredited engineering or engineering technology curriculum. In addition to technical courses, subjects may include the humanities and social studies, mathematics and science.
The teacher, as an individual, must:
- Possess and be able to communicate a broad and accurate knowledge of the subject area.
- Possess self-confidence, create a feeling of harmony between self and students and be able to meet difficulties with poise.
- Possess a sense of proportion, stressing fundamentals and disregarding trivial detail. Give assignments that challenge students, demanding thinking in the completion of assignments.
- Demonstrate such an intense interest and enthusiasm for the subject area and for the enhancement of learning processes that students are motivated to their fullest capacities.
- Be available for advising and counseling students before and after graduation.
- Teach a minimum of two semester or three quarter courses per calendar year.
- Have considerable endorsement from students, using both regular course evaluations and individual letters of recommendation as evidence.
- Attend the section annual meeting at which the award is presented; and make a presentation at that meeting (or the following section meeting) to share some element of his/her success as a teacher.
- Possess a strong record of activity in ASEE or the educational activities of another professional society.
The teacher's contributions to the profession should include at least three of the following:
- Participation in the development of courses or curricula.
- Development of teaching equipment or development of a wider application of teaching equipment previously developed.
- Contribution to the improvement of laboratories or other facilities.
- Development or authorship of instructional material or a text that enhances the student learning process.
- Publication of original work, through any medium, that enhances the engineering education process or adds to the literature pertaining to teaching methodologies.
- Service as a mentor to other teaching faculty or participation in the conduct of seminars and workshops that are focused on helping other teachers improve their classroom effectiveness.
Section Outstanding Campus Representative Award
ASEE has initiated this award in order to recognize those ASEE Campus Representatives who have achieved excellence in their roles as the Society's representative on campus. The ASEE Campus Representative acts as a liaison to help determine members interests and reactions to Society programs and publications, to stimulate interest among the faculty in section and national meetings and to promote individual membership and involvement. This award is bestowed annually upon those ASEE Campus Representatives who have demonstrated staunch support for ASEE on their campuses.
The Award: The award consists of a certificate to the ASEE Campus Representative selected from each section and is presented at the section meeting.
Qualifications: Nominees must have served ASEE significantly through active participation in the following areas:
- Recognition of outstanding teaching and research activities on his or her campus by submitting ASEE award nominations and support of the New Engineering Educators program.
- Encouragement of faculty members to submit articles to ASEE publications.
- Encouraging faculty members to submit papers for presentation at section and national meetings.
- Promotion of individual membership in ASEE.
- Encouragement of faculty attendance at section, division and national ASEE meetings.
Selection: Each ASEE Campus Representative must complete an annual activity report. The report is completed online and copies will automatically be forwarded to ASEE headquarters and their dean/head of engineering. The report is open from early-August through late-December each year. Following the closure of the online report, copies will be sent to each Campus Rep’s Section Chair. Upon reviewing the reports and following section bylaws, an Outstanding Section Campus Rep will be selected based on the evidence that indicates consistent and outstanding promotion of ASEE on campus according to the above award criteria.
Zone Outstanding Campus Representative Award
Each Section Chair will forward to the respective Zone Chair the name of the Section Campus Representative Award recipient together with the appropriate documentation. The Zone Chairs will then select the recipients of the Outstanding Zone Campus Representative Awards.
The Award: The award consists of a plaque to be presented to the ASEE Campus Representative, selected by each Zone Chair, at the ASEE Annual Conference.
Gulf Southwest Section - Best Paper Awards
Each year three awards are given to the best engineering education papers published and presented at the annual meeting of the ASEE-Gulf Southwest (GSW) Section. Awards in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100 are given to the first, second and third placed papers, respectively. In addition certificates of recognition are presented to the authors of the selected papers. In the case of co-authors, individual certificates will be presented, but the honorarium will be split among the number of authors. Award presentations are made at the Honors and Awards Luncheon of the ASEE-GSW section.
Qualifications: The paper must be presented by the author(s) at the annual meeting. The paper must be an original paper written specifically for and published in the Proceedings of the ASEE-GSW Section Annual Conference. It is permissible that the paper be of similar content to the papers written by the same author(s) for other conferences.
Selection: The members of the ASEE-GSW Section Awards Committee will make the selection of best papers.
Gulf Southwest Section - Outstanding Service Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize a member who has demonstrated a long history of service to engineering education and/or the ASEE-GSW section.
The Award: The award consists of a $500 honorarium and a certificate of recognition. Presentations are made at the section annual meeting with notation in the ASEE Annual Awards Banquet Program.
Qualifications: Any current or past member of GSW section with a distinguished record of service to engineering education and/or the ASEE-GSW section shall be eligible for this award.

The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize young faculty participation in ASEE or engineering education activities and events.
The Award: The annual award consists of a $500 honorarium and a certificate of recognition. Presentations are made at the section annual meeting with notation in the ASEE Annual Awards Banquet Program
Qualifications:
1. Current or past member of ASEE GSW Section
2. A tenure track faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank who has less than 8 years of experience from the date of first academic appointment
Candidates may be faculty members in engineering, engineering technology, or in disciplines supporting engineering programs.
Nomination: Any member of the GSW section may nominate candidates for this award by preparing a nomination package that includes an ASEE General Award Nomination Form, candidate’s curriculum vitae, and a nomination rationale statement highlighting the faculty’s contribution to engineering education and active participation at ASEE events. Middle Atlantic Section - Distinguished Teaching Award
The ASEE Middle Atlantic Section is committed to excellence in the instruction of engineering and engineering technology students and annually recognizes an outstanding engineering or engineering technology teacher from the section. This individual is then nominated as the Mid-Atlantic Section's representative for the ASEE National Outstanding Teaching Medal.
The Award: The annual award, presented at the spring meeting of the section, consists of a $500 honorarium and a certificate of recognition.
Qualifications: Candidates must be members of the ASEE Middle Atlantic Section who teach any subject included in an accredited engineering or engineering technology curriculum that leads to an engineering or engineering technology degree. In addition to engineering courses, the subjects may include mathematics, science and other required subjects in engineering and technology curricula. The award recipient must agree to attend the spring meeting at which the award is presented. Otherwise, the award will be given to the next highest ranked candidate who agrees to attend. Exceptions will be made for emergency conditions.
The teacher as an individual should have a broad and accurate knowledge of his or her field and possess a sense of proportion, stressing fundamentals at the expense of trivial details. Teachers should challenge their students with assignments that stimulate interest and enthusiasm for the subject while requiring thought form completion. Teachers should be active counselors for their students before graduation and be available and willing to provide counseling for their former students after graduation.
The teacher's contributions to the profession should include course, curriculum and laboratory development and the sharing of these accomplishments through conference presentations and journal article publications.
Nomination: Any member of the section may nominate candidates for this award by preparing a nomination package that must include a nomination form, a citation, a nomination rationale statement, a curriculum vitae, and evidence of accomplishments. Supporting letters from colleagues and former students are required.
Nomination forms will be sent out to all members of the Middle Atlantic Section by the Middle Atlantic Section Awards Committee. An original and three copies of the nomination package must reach the Middle Atlantic Section Awards Chairperson by January 15. Midwest Section - Outstanding Standing Service Award
This award is meant to recognize a member of the Midwest Section for outstanding service to engineering and/or technology education as well as for involvement in ASEE and ASEE Midwest Section activities.
The Award: An honorarium of up to $1000 and certificate of recognition to an individual whose contributions to engineering and/or technology education primarily through teaching support and/or non-classroom, student-related activities deserves recognition.
Qualifications: Any member of the section may nominate candidates for this award by preparing a nomination package that includes a nomination letter, a nomination rationale statement, a vitae and evidence of service accomplishments. Supporting letters from colleagues are recommended but are not required. The announcement of the Service Award annual competition is mailed to the Deans and Campus Representatives by the Section Awards Committee Chair during April or May each year. The original of the nomination package is to be sent to the Section Awards Committee Chair. The nomination deadline is set each year by the Section Awards Committee Chair. This award is sponsored by the Deans of the Midwest Section.
Midwest Section Person - Mile Award
This award is presented each year to an institution in the ASEE Midwest Section that has obtained the largest total person-miles attending the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The award consists of a certificate, traveling car award trophy, and $250 award. The award is presented at the Business Luncheon at the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The trophy will be housed at that institution for one year until the next annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The recipient institution is required to return the trophy at the next annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference or ship the trophy to the Program Chair prior to the conference.
Eligibility Requirements: Engineering/technology colleges, other educational institutions, industry, government, and consulting firms from the ASEE Midwest Section are eligible. The people from an ASEE Midwest Section institution must attend the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference.
Selection Process: The recipient will be selected by the ASEE Midwest Section Program Chair and Chair-elect. The Program Chair and Chair-elect will determine the total number of people from each ASEE Midwest Section institution attending the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The total number of people from each institution will be multiplied by the total mileage from their home institution to the location of the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The institution that obtains the largest total number of miles will receive the ASEE Midwest Section Person-Mile Award.
St. Lawrence Section - Outstanding Educator Award
The ASEE St. Lawrence Section Outstanding Educator Award is presented for excellence in the instruction of engineering, engineering technology or engineering science. The purpose of the award is to honor the recipient and to serve as an incentive to make further significant contributions to teaching.
The Award: The award consists of a certificate, presented by the section, and travel expenses to attend the annual section meeting at which the award is presented.
Qualifications: Nominees will be evaluated on the following two areas of criteria:
- Teacher's personal attributes:
- Possess and be able to communicate a broad and accurate knowledge of the subject area;
- Possess self-confidence, create a feeling of harmony between self and students and be able to meet difficulties with poise;
- Possess a sense of proportion, stressing fundamentals and disregarding trivial detail, and give assignments that challenge students, demanding thinking in the completion of assignments;

- Two year private and public colleges awarding associate degrees in engineering or engineering technology programs, or
- Three year colleges awarding three year diplomas.
In addition to the technical courses, the subjects may include humanities and social studies, mathematics, science and other subjects included in engineering and engineering technology curricula.

The trophy will be housed at that institution for one year until the next annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The recipient institution is required to return the trophy at the next annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference or ship the trophy to the Program Chair prior to the conference.
Eligibility Requirements: Engineering/technology colleges, other educational institutions, industry, government, and consulting firms from the ASEE Midwest Section are eligible. The people from an ASEE Midwest Section institution must attend the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference.
Selection Process: The recipient will be selected by the ASEE Midwest Section Program Chair and Chair-elect. The Program Chair and Chair-elect will determine the total number of people from each ASEE Midwest Section institution attending the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The total number of people from each institution will be multiplied by the total mileage from their home institution to the location of the annual ASEE Midwest Section Conference. The institution that obtains the largest total number of miles will receive the ASEE Midwest Section Person-Mile Award.
St. Lawrence Section - Outstanding Educator Award
The ASEE St. Lawrence Section Outstanding Educator Award is presented for excellence in the instruction of engineering, engineering technology or engineering science. The purpose of the award is to honor the recipient and to serve as an incentive to make further significant contributions to teaching.
The Award: The award consists of a certificate, presented by the section, and travel expenses to attend the annual section meeting at which the award is presented.
Qualifications: Nominees will be evaluated on the following two areas of criteria:
- Teacher's personal attributes:
- Possess and be able to communicate a broad and accurate knowledge of the subject area;
- Possess self-confidence, create a feeling of harmony between self and students and be able to meet difficulties with poise;
- Possess a sense of proportion, stressing fundamentals and disregarding trivial detail, and give assignments that challenge students, demanding thinking in the completion of assignments;
- Demonstrate an intense interest and enthusiasm for the subject area thereby motivating students to their fullest capacities;
- Be available for counseling students before and after graduation.
- Teacher's professional contributions:
- Participation in the development of courses or curricula;
- Contribution to the improvement of laboratories or other facilities;
- Development of a generally applicable conceptual, mathematical or probability model;
- Publication of original work through any information medium;
- Development of teaching equipment or development of a wider application of teaching equipment previously developed.
Eligibility: Individuals within the St. Lawrence Section boundaries may be nominated for this award. Candidates may be teachers of any subject in the engineering and engineering technology curriculum of:
- Two year private and public colleges awarding associate degrees in engineering or engineering technology programs, or
- Three year colleges awarding three year diplomas.
In addition to the technical courses, the subjects may include humanities and social studies, mathematics, science and other subjects included in engineering and engineering technology curricula.
