The Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) annually awards the Biomedical Engineering Teaching Award to recognize contributions in the field of biomedical engineering education by new faculty members as evidenced by innovative teaching materials, curricula, textbooks and/or professional papers and by activity in ASEE/BED and/or other biomedical engineering organizations. Awardees must have a primary educational role in biomedical engineering, either through a dedicated BME/Bioengineering program or through a related engineering program. Faculty members who have no more than 5 years (by June 1 of the year in which the award is given) of teaching experience with primary course responsibility at the university/college or community college level are eligible for this award. The award consists of $350 and a commemorative plaque.
Nomination packages are due before February 15 to the BED Awards Chair.

- LETTERS OF SUPPORT FROM CURRENT OR FORMER STUDENTS – All nominations must be supported by at least one letter from current or former students.
- LETTERS OF SUPPORT FROM COLLEAGUES – Nominations should be supported by letters from colleagues who are familiar with the nominee’s teaching.
IMPORTANT: To receive this Society award, upon notification of selection, the awardee must agree to attend the award ceremony at the ASEE Annual Conference. Otherwise, the award will be given to the next highest-ranked candidate who agrees to attend.
Membership in the American Society for Engineering Education is a requirement for eligibility for this award.
Any member of the Society may nominate candidates for this award. However, current members of award selection committees are excluded as nominators and/or as candidates for any award under the purview of their respective committees.
Previous winners of the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award are not eligible for this award.
