Editorial Content

ASEE Prism welcomes ideas for articles that cover broad, topical issues in these areas of engineering education:

  • Instructional methods
  • Innovative curricula
  • Lifelong learning
  • Research opportunities, trends, and developments
  • Education and research projects with government and industry
  • Outreach activities that encourage young people to pursue studies and careers in engineering and engineering technology
  • Initiatives that increase the participation of women and minority groups in engineering and engineering technology studies and careers
  • Efforts that support the recruitment, retention, and development of quality faculty members

Writing Style

Writing should be clear, accurate, and concise with no footnotes. Any technical references should be recognizable to engineers in all disciplines. All acronyms should be spelled out on first reference.

For guidance in using appropriate writing style and word usage, consult The Chicago Manual of Style (The University of Chicago Press) or Words into Type (Prentice Hall).

PLEASE NOTE: The editors reserve all rights to edit material once it has been accepted for publication.

Submission Process

Prism generally does not accept unsolicited feature articles. We do, however, welcome submissions of essays for our Last Word page. These should be about 675 words and present an argument that generates discussion. Topics are left up to the authors, but should be of interest to engineering educators. Articles are chosen based on the importance or timeliness of the issues raised, clarity, and quality of presentation. They can be submitted either by text email or email with an attachment in Word.

Please allow at least 12 weeks for your submission to complete the review process. Every article submitted to ASEE Prism is reviewed carefully by the magazine's editorial staff. During this time, your article should not be submitted elsewhere and should not be already under consideration by another publication. Once your submission has completed the review process, we will notify you in writing whether your article has been accepted or rejected for publication in ASEE Prism.

Copyright Policy

It is ASEE's policy to own the copyright to material published in ASEE Prism. By submitting an outline or a manuscript, you, the author(s) agree that the copyright for the article will be transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. As the author(s), you retain rights to the fair use of the paper, such as in teaching and other nonprofit uses.

Complimentary Copies

Authors and co-authors each receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their article appears.

Is your article more appropriate for a journal?

If you have written an academic paper about a specific course, program, or teaching approach; have done a literature search; and wish your paper to be archived as a scholarly work, consider submitting it to one of ASEE's peer-reviewed journals instead of ASEE Prism. For descriptions of these journals and submission information, see ASEE Publications.
